Crispy Oven-Baked Tostones (Patacones)

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

These crispy oven-baked tostones are a healthier option to the traditional green plantain tostones or patacones. Instead of being twice-fried, they’re twice-baked. Making them crunchy and delicious, without being too oily.

Ingredients to Make Crispy Oven-Baked Tostones:

  • Plantains: green plantains work best as they have not developed their sweetness yet.
  • Oil: any high-heat neutral flavored oil will work, but I like to use avocado oil.
  • Salt

How to Make Crispy Baked Tostones:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400℉.
  2. Peel and cut the plantains into ½ inch slices.
  3. On a lined baking sheet, toss and coat the plantains in the avocado oil and salt.
  4. Spread the plantains into a single layer and bake for 10 minutes.
  5. After 10 minutes, remove the plantains from the oven, carefully smash them, and then flip them over.
  6. Return the plantains to the oven and continue to bake for an additional 10 minutes or until golden brown.

How to Open and Cut Plantains:

  1. Cut off the bottom and top tips.
  2. Make a slice down the length of the skin of the plantain.
  3. Push your thumb beneath the skin to detach part of it from the plantain.
  4. Peel the skin away from the fruit, repeating step 3 as many times as needed until the skin is completely removed.

How to Serve Crispy Oven-Baked Tostones:

Serve these while hot and crispy alongside your favorite Caribbean, Latin, or African meal. These can also be enjoyed as a tasty snack.

How to Store:

Tostones are meant to be enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.  You can reheat them in the oven on 350℉ for a few minutes.
